Johns Hopkins-Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Cancer Research Fund Award
Johns Hopkins Department of Radiation Oncology & Molecular Radiation Sciences and One Health Group team jointly win coveted award
In September 2017, the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins announced the fourth annual request for applications for the Johns Hopkins-Allegheny Health Network Cancer Research Fund. Hopkins-AHN awards fund cancer research projects at the level of $100,000 direct costs per year, with an award term of two years. It is expected that these awards seek to answer innovative questions in cancer research and potentially lead to successful, longer-term funding from other funding sources.
Recipients of the Hopkins-AHN awards were notified this past February. An exciting project that was awarded is a joint effort between the Johns Hopkins University Department of Radiation Oncology & Molecular Radiation Sciences and One Health Group (OHG). The collaborative project will commence in early April 2018, with its primary goal being to pioneer non-ionizing, very low power electromagnetic waves as a viable tool for real-time imaging. According to the joint academia-industry team, the specific project aims are:
-
Development of an RF radar system for detection of moving lung tumors;
-
Exploration and development of an RF radar system to detect pancreas or liver fiducial markers; and
-
Verification and refinement of both prototype systems using physical phantoms.
